Patrick Joseph “Speedy” Graven, Jr. passed peacefully in his home in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey on June 8, 2023. He was the devoted husband (63 years),of Anna Mary “Nancy" (Mount) and the loving and supportive father of Maureen (Bill Berenato), Anne Marie (Tom McHugh), Theresa “Terri” (Joe Pooler), Margaret “Margie” (Neal Pooler) and Patrick (Bridget Foy). He took great pride and joy in his grandchildren Liam (Nazaneen) Eells, Joseph “Joey” Pooler, Kieran Eells, Declan Eells, Connor (Nicole) McHugh, Daniel “Danny” (Kelly) Pooler, Caitriona “Cait” Eells, Sean Pooler, Clare McHugh, Timothy “Timmy” Pooler, Kevin Pooler, Matthew McHugh, Patrick Pooler, Brigid Pooler, Ryan Pooler, Aidan Pooler, Anna “Annie” Graven and, most recently, great grandson Edward “Eddie” Eells. Speedy was fond of his in-laws, Edward “Eddie”(Pat) Mount, Frank Mount and George (Pat) Mount. He is predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Julia Graven, sisters Theresa (Sister Clare Maureen, I.H.M.), Margaret “Peggy” Barten, Mary Graven, in laws John and Anna Mount, brother in laws, John Mount, James “Jimmy” Mount, Robert “Bob” Barten, sister in-law, Joy Mount and son in-law, Charles “Chuck” Eells. Patrick was born the son of Irish immigrants from County Mayo who met in and lived in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia. His nickname, “Speedy” was given to him by his neighborhood friends. Most people thought he was named “Speedy” for his slow and methodical approach to things; instead it came from his first business, “Speedy Shine for a Dime.” Speedy attended St. Gabriel’s Parochial school and Southeast Catholic High School. Speedy was a devoted member of St. Gabriel’s parish and despite having a new home in New Jersey he always considered St. Gabriel’s to be his parish. Speedy was a printer by trade and loved to tell his children and grandchildren that he set type for many of the exhibits at the Smithsonian Institute. He later went on to a longtime career with the Service Employees International Union and completed his working days with the ALM Maintenance Company. Most days one would find Speedy repairing cars, appliances or doing home renovations for family, friends and neighbors. People usually consulted Speedy for his technical acumen and his pursuit of solving problems to help others. He loved to read and always had knowledge to share. He enjoyed time at the Jersey shore. He made wonderful memories with family and friends in the Villas, Cape May and Wildwood. He took vacations with his family in the Outer Banks and took trips and cruises with his in laws and his friends. Speedy was an avid Eagles and Notre Dame fan and had a passion for all things Irish. Speedy lived his life for his wife, his children and grandchildren and his faith. God now holds the life we all loved. Speedy always offered a drink of cheer to all who visited and when visitors left he would warmly say “Have a safe trip home.” Cheers to a life well lived. Interment will be private.
